Sweet dreams are made of this… If “this” is an entire week devoted to dessert. That’s exactly what the founder of Dessert Week dreamed up, and in 2016 he brought that dream to life for the enjoyment of thousands of people in Los Angeles.
LA may be the land of kale salads and green juice, but people here also love their sweets. That’s why in 2013 Daniel Amitin, the founder of Dessert Week, challenged himself to limit his dessert intake to only one treat a week.
Because he could only have one dessert a week, Daniel started searching out the best desserts LA had to offer. He discovered ube-flavored cupcakes, artisanal churros, and ice cream sundaes that could only be described as epic masterpieces. As he tasted more and more incredible desserts across LA, he found himself wanting a way to really indulge.
The First Dessert Week
A couple years into the challenge, Daniel decided he’d earned a break from his one-dessert-a-week commitment. He decided to take a week off with the goal of indulging in LA’s incredible dessert scene. But as he searched around for something like the DineLA or Restaurant Week of desserts, he came up empty-handed. How could there not be a week — or at least a day! — to celebrate desserts?
That’s when Daniel decided to create the ultimate dessert celebration for sweets lovers like himself. He partnered with LA’s best bakeries, creameries, patisseries, and more to offer a week of exclusive deals and discounts at shops all across LA. The week culminated in a sold-out festival in Downtown LA where dozens of the top dessert makers gathered from all across the city. From live music and games to a beer garden and an epic pie-eating contest, this was more than just an Insta-worthy dessert fest — this was the ultimate celebration for people with a serious sweet tooth.
Get Your Dessert On
Now in its second year, Dessert Week is gearing up for another unforgettable week of tempting treats and incredible flavors. Mexican chocolate pies with cinnamon-spiked whipped cream? Campfire-flavored beignets? Ice cream in flavors like matcha green tea or saffron and rose?
Dessert Week participants can expect all those treats and more, and they can even nominate their favorite dessert makers to join in the fun. Nab one of the coveted “Sampler Experience” tickets to taste as many desserts as your heart desires. Tickets go on sale September 14 at noon Pacific Time, so mark your calendars!
Until then, the Dessert Week team is working hard behind the scenes to produce an event that’s even sweeter than last year. And (great news for those not in LA!), they’re planning to bring Dessert Week to Chicago, New York, and San Francisco in 2018.
